4/8/2018 1 Comment A Quiet Place Movie ReviewWhat a disappointment this film was. I really wanted to like this film, I really did. This was my most anticipated film of the year, and at the moment also the second worst. The only real positives I have are the acting, directing, cinematography, and the score. Everything else ranges from being mediocre to straight up bad. The film is a mixture of 10 Cloverfield Lane and Lights Out, which are both much better films in my opinion. This movie was beyond predictable, everything here has been done way better and long before. I can't really say much else without spoiling the plot, so I'll just end it here. A Quiet Place is a very well directed and acted film, with some major flaws that spoil the overall experience. I'm giving this film a 4/10

I genuinely don't know how to start off this review. When I saw this film and this amazing experience was over, I sat in my seat for 15 minutes after the film had concluded. Not because I was waiting for an after credits scene, or something silly like that. It was because I was in such pure awe of what I had just seen. This was just with my experience, but it was one of the best experiences i've ever had in a theater. I don't think a single word, or even a whisper for that matter was uttered throughout the entire film. Alright now look, this film isn't for everyone. This film will make people sick in the same way that Darren Aranofsky's mother! did. There's quite a bit of gruesome imagery in this film but a majority of it is presented in a psychologically intriguing way. Sure this film has the gore and the horror, but at it's core this film is about making you think. The overall theme and the way it makes you think is somewhat comparable to the original Blade Runner on just how much and what it says about human instinct and nature. The main problems I have with this film are that it tries to be scary by using some beginner tactics like jumpscares. There's only a few in this film but those soured the overall experience for me. Also the second act can feel quite slow and drawn out at times. Gina Rodriguez's writing and character as a whole is pretty cringey. The whole plot has some cheesiness added to it which is totally unnecessary. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, as well as the VFX being pretty good as well. Despite all of my flaws, this is a fantastic film and as of 4/3/2018 my film of the year. While I don't think it's a masterpiece or as good as 2049 this is still a great film that i highly recommend watching (in theaters if you live in a place where it's playing). I'm giving this one an 8/10 Original Watch Date: 2/22/2018 4/3/2018 0 Comments Game Night Movie ReviewReally well acted, directed, and it was insanely enjoyable. I laughed in this film more than any other comedy I've seen in a decent while. Not all of the humor hit but a large majority of it did. It's so rare nowadays for a comedy to have genuinely great directing. This film has some really nice aerial shots that the houses actually look like a game of Life. Acting is amazing from everyone and I genuinely could believe the relationship from the two main leads (Jason Bateman and Rachel Mcadams). Actin g is pretty serviceable from everyone else besides Jesse Plemmons gives an almost perfect deadpan comedy performance.
Alright now that I've praised this film I think it's time we get into some of the negatives. Once again not all of the humor hit, the plot gets way too convoluted, there's way too many references that a majority of people won't understand, and the plot resorts to an average comedy plot. The plot starts off with a simple enough concept but they throw a few too many twists and turns, also I feel as if the second and third act could have been more inspired. When that comes around the film is very reminiscent of past films such as Central Intelligence and The Hitman's Bodyguard. The flaws are few, but pretty major. While I didn't think the film was great, I still think it's pretty good and would recommend it to just about anyone. It's definitely one of the best and most inspired comedies I've seen in a while. I don't really see anyone watching this and thinking it was boring or that they didn't have fun. Overall this film was good and I'd give it a solid 7/10 Original Watch Date: 2/25/2018 4/3/2018 0 Comments Ready Player One FIlm ReviewReady Player One takes place in a dystopian futuristic version of Columbus, Ohio. Set in the year 2045 the film has a lot of futuristic and interesting technology to offer. The main plot centers around our protagonist Wade Watts and his journey to find the 3 keys inside of a virtual video game called the oasis. Those 3 keys were left behind by the founder of the oasis James Halliday, and lead to the rights to control the oasis.
This film does in fact capture that classic Spielberg magic, however it doesn't have the quality that past Spielberg films have. I don't even think this as good as The Post. I had more fun watching this, but its not as good as that film (and i didn't think the post was all that great). A multitude of reasons cause this, starting off with the plot. The plot's potential is so squandered and nothing really happens. This is a cookie cutter film, no interesting things happen. They didn't even try to do anything even slightly interesting with the story. It genuinely feels like a Disney film in that aspect, come to think of it, pretty much everything in this feels Disney. There is one reference that made me smile for a solid 5 minutes, but I consider that a spoiler. So I'll just say it involves a classic movie. All of the other references don't feel forced, but they feel really unnecessary. The references sort of felt like they were there just to distract everyone from the plot and everything else being so insanely average and a lot of stuff being straight out bad. Speaking of bad things about this film, lets talk about the characterization and dialogue in this film. The dialogue is genuine garbage. There is not a single line in this film that doesn't feel forced and poorly written. This isn't just the writing's fault, the acting is pretty awful as well and pretty much everyone is guilty of delivering their lines badly. Ben Mendelsohn is a genuinely great actor who's potential is squandered. Everyone is already praising the VFX and i have to say I somewhat agree with that. They aren't revolutionary by any means but they're very well done. It is a bit jarring between the borderline lifelike backdrops and the characters being obviously CGI. It's good CGI but it's still obivous. They take footage from a classic film and legitimately just overlay CGI characters. While it's entertaining, the VFX get pretty awful. It's genuine a weird film cinematography wise. Steven Spielberg is a great director, but for some reason this film only looks visual interesting in the oasis. Everything outside is simply competently shot. Overall I would recommend this film. There's a lot of fun to be had but it's really not that great. This film feels like Stranger Things (though not near as good) in the aspect that it feels like a family movie. I don't see a person of any age watching this film and not at least being entertained. I'm going to give this film a 5.5/10 (slightly above average). |
